What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on improving flexibility and strength for the whole body, while also developing balance and coordination. Pilates emphasises proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment and concentrates on smooth flowing movement.

Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, believed that injuries were caused by imbalances in the body and habitual patterns of movement. He observed that when a person had a weakness or injury, that person overcompensated or overdeveloped another area to achieve a certain functional movement. Thus, Joseph found that it was critical to correct the malalignment and to re-educate the body.

What is Pilates used for?

Pilates is regularly used in the management of low back pain as it specifically targets the deep abdominal (tummy) muscles, gluteal (buttock) muscles and the stabilising muscles in the back. These muscles, often collectively referred to as your “core”, can be appropriately challenged with Pilates while also enabling us to develop a strong, flexible and aligned body.

How do we use Pilates to help you?

At Clare Physiotherapy Clinic, we incorporate Pilates based exercises into our treatment programmes. Exercises are based on our findings in the assessment of the client. Each treatment programme is specifically designed and progressed based on each individual's needs.

I am already attending for physiotherapy and they incorporate Pilates exercises into their treatments. I've only just found out that my physio, Bernadette, is a qualified Pilates teacher so that's an absolute bonus for me!
I have and will continue to recommend this clinic!

They have excellent customer care skills, are clear in giving advice and keep you informed every step of the way. You are also supplied with an exercise sheet to ensure continuity of wellbeing.
